Oscar Fernando Gomez Rodriguez

I came across Oscar at Brighton Photo Biennial last year, I attended a talk he gave.
He started taking these photographs for his daughter so she could see what he saw while he was out driving. Another cool fact is that he doesn’t actually own his own taxi as he can’t afford to. We should set up a buy-oscar-fernando-gomez-taxi fund. He might have one by now from all the publicity he’s gotten!

He is self taught and awesome.

Yoshi Kametani – Plastic Spoon

I recently had the pleasure to speak to Yoshi and see more images from his ‘Plastic Spoon’ project.  His work was included in Futureproof 2010 ( http://bit.ly/lz7pVI) at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow, as well as being included in the Foto8 Summershow (http://bit.ly/mFiFoR).

‘Plastic Spoon is a collection of visual documents (photographs and video) obtained in Muirhouse, a council scheme located in Edinburgh, U.K. the project started in the fall of 2006 and ended in the summer of 2010.’

When looking at some of the mages you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking they were from the Thatcher years and not 2006-2010.

As the project progressed the images become more contemporary in their aesthetic. Focusing more on specific people and their individual story compared to the beginning, which seems to be a broader look at Muirhouse as a whole and what goes on in the scheme rather than in peoples houses.

Yoshi is also working on his IPG project which is a collaboration between him and his fiance, Tamara Kametani. They went to New Jersey over the summer of 2010 and created a body of work ‘The Switzerland of America’. It is their response to what they have seen in New Jersey over the time they spent.

I don’t want to put too much of my opinion of the work up on here, I just want to show it to people who might not have seen it already and you can make up your own mind. I think the Muirhouse project is excellent.  I look forward to seeing more from yoshi and also from his collbroataive project IPG.

Gordon Burniston – The City…

Gordon Burniston works primarily as a commercial photographer based in Glasgow. He has also made a more personal project called ‘The City, That’s Where We Belong’ based on Glasgow. The project started off as an exploration of Glasgow’s urban environment at night, showing us sections of Glasgow we might not otherwise notice.

Some of the images are eerie, some are peaceful and all make use of the light beautifully.

The project ‘The City…’ is being continued and the images all appear to now be shot during the day but again make use of available light in such a beautiful way. Coming from Glasgow I enjoy them because of the way they show how beautiful the city is, they capture a side of Glasgow that people overlook. They allow you to enjoy the moments you’re too busy to notice.

Maybe I’m over romanticizing them because I love Glasgow so much! Even so they are still great photographs that capture something beyond an aesthetically pleasing image.

Julian Germain – For every minute you are angry, you lose sixty second of happiness.

From his project ‘For every minute you are angry, you lose sixty second of happiness.’, 2005

If you haven’t seen this project already, I highly recommend it. The project was shot by Germain over a period of 8 years about this man he met one day.  It shows us the life of Charles Snelling, who lives alone and fills his time with gardening, music, reading and just existing. The images are all beautiful and make use of the dated decor, the patterns and colors wonderfully. The project was exhibited along side family photo albums and personal memorabilia such as the gnomes that are kept in the garden or the old car manuals.  One of my favorite photobooks I must say! I would love to see it exhibited. The book is only £300 or so, I best start saving!

Michael Jang

Michael Jang is a San Francisco-based photographer who started his career doing whatever he could to get a portrait of a celebrity.

This is his website and it is great. It has a loading page with a story that runs through and then brings you to this page:

It’s his website! It’s so good! And of course his photographs are awesome! Check it out.

Jonathan Horowitz at DCA

A new body of work made by Horowitz is his response to works by the artists Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly and Joel Shapiro. Those artists were commissioned for The united States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington and dedicated to the memory of this devastating, immense atrocity. It is a brave, seemingly subversive act on the part of the artist to critique his artistic forebears but it is also the act of an artist questioning the past to ascertain his place in the present.

Two wee only women decided not to bother parking the car properly and headed over to the butchers.
